How We Work
We work at three levels
In Our Community
Proximity2Humanity’s global HQ is in Albemarle, Stanly County, NC. This is where we live. We’re working to preserve green space in the county and create recreational outlets for the enjoyment of our residents and to draw people to our beautiful community. This is where we’re working to build cohesion within the community across all political, ethnic, and racial lines
In our State
We work throughout the State of North Carolina. As a particularly disaster-prone state (fires, floods, hurricanes, etc), we manage disaster response initiatives throughout our State in order to help North Carolinians build back better. Our founders have worked in global disaster response for 25+ years. We work to incorporate our lessons learned from different corners of the world into ways that best help North Carolinians.
Globally
At the global level, we are supporting mutual aid initiatives that help communities help themselves during disasters, during periods of upheaval, and during times of shortage. We believe that communities themselves are the best drivers of their recovery processes. We want to support them by strategically providing resources that can be shared amongst themselves in a spirit of mutual aid and transparency
Our Projects
Mutual Aid Sudan Coalition
We support community-led humanitarian response in Sudan. Through the Mutual Aid Sudan Coalition, we fund local Emergency Response Rooms (ERRs) and other mutual aid groups that run communal kitchens, provide shelters, medicines, evacuations, and women’s safe spaces.. Our partners have delivered food to tens of thousands of people, restored power and water, and evacuated families from conflict zones. We prioritize direct funding—almost every cent of every dollar goes straight to those in need, without bureaucratic delays.
The Back 40 Project
Stanly County—our home—sits at the edge of rapid development from nearby Charlotte. We’re already seeing pressure on farmland and rural life. We support smart, balanced growth that welcomes new families while preserving what makes rural life meaningful. Our focus is thoughtful housing, open space, and local resilience.
Main Street Initiative
We’re working to revitalize small towns across our state starting with Albemarle, NC. We acquire dilipidated properties and restore them to their original style in ways that create opportunities for small businesses and community spaces. We also support local artists in restoring ghost signs, large format murals, and modern art in conspicuous places across our town and state. We want to host art exchange programs where we bring international artists and their work to our small town and share our local artists’ work globally
The Independent
Cuisine, Culture, Community, and Coffee. As a husband and wife team from different parts of the world (he’s American…she’s Jordanian), we love new experiences, new foods, new cultures, and new coffees. We believe others will love them too. In the summer of 2025, we are opening a bistro ,“The Independent”, that will blend southern culture with middle eastern culture through food, community, music, art, and coffee. Please come to Albemarle anytime after July 2025 to see this dream come to fruition. First round of coffee is on us…!
Restoring The Lost Art Of Civil Discourse
We’re working to revitalize small towns across our state starting with Albemarle, NC. We acquire dilipidated properties and restore them to their original style in ways that create opportunities for small businesses and community spaces. We also support local artists in restoring ghost signs, large format murals, and modern art in conspicuous places across our town and state. We want to host art exchange programs where we bring international artists and their work to our small town and share our local artists’ work globally
The Into The Woods Initiative
Our family loves the outdoors. We’re concerned with the amount of time we spend looking at screens. We’re working to create ways that get our family out of the house and into nature in ways where everyone in the family (dog included!) can do it. We have multiple activities under this initiative.
